Tele-Workshops

In 2006 AMI-Québec collaborated with the Foundation for Vital Aging (www.careringvoice.com) to create tele-workshops-information sessions on mental health related issues via the telephone. The first phase included six workshops aimed at reaching families living in circumstances that deny them easy access to English services. The positive response reinforced our conviction that this is an effective tool in helping families become better informed and prepared to cope with mental illness.

In 2007-2008, phase 2 of the project will be offering the following six sessions:

September 26, 2007 / 7 – 8 pm
I have no interest in anything these days. What's wrong with me?
Special guest speaker: Dr. Allan Fielding, Psychiatrist
This workshop will help you determine if your sadness is appropriate or may require professional help.

October 24, 2007 / 7 – 8 pm
Wills & trusts: techniques for protecting the future of your ill relative.
Special guest speaker: Me Sylvain Carpentier, Notary, Financial Planner
"What will happen to my loved one when I'm gone?" is a common worry. The time for families to secure their relative's future is now!

November 28, 2007 / 7 – 8 pm
Schizophrenia: what doctors know, what you should know.
Special guest speaker: Dr. Mark Laporta, Psychiatrist
Learn about the impact schizophrenia has on thoughts, feelings and behavior.

January 30, 2008 / 7 – 8 pm
How to communicate when there's a mental illness involved.
Special guest speaker: Dr. Camillo Zaccia, Psychologist
Effective communication is always a challenge. Mental illness can turn it into a trying experience.

February 27, 2008 / 7 – 8 pm
Facing stigma: you have the power to deal with it.
Special guest speaker: Moira Edwards, Nurse
The stigma surrounding mental illness is often hurtful and infuriating. Reducing its impact is part of moving towards recovery.

March 26, 2008 / 7 – 8 pm
You've heard of it, but what exactly is anxiety?
